ret|i|nac|u|lum «REHT uh NAK yuh luhm», noun, plural -u|la «-yuh luh».
1. Botany. a viscid gland on the stigma of orchids and plants of the milkweed family for holding the pollen masses together.
2. Anatomy. a bridle or frenum; a fibrous structure binding down the tendons of muscles.
3. Zoology. a) a small scale or plate which in some insects checks too much protrusion of the sting. b) an arrangement of hooks, or of hooks and bristles, whereby the fore and hind wings of insects are interlocked when in flight.
